Waiver of Liability and Guidelines
Welcome to STEPS BJJ!
We are thrilled that you are joining our family at STEPS BJJ! Our academy is built on the principles of respect, discipline, and humility, which guide every aspect of our training. At STEPS BJJ, we believe in fostering a positive and inclusive environment where all students—regardless of age or skill level—can grow both physically and mentally through the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We aim to build a community that supports one another on and off the mats, creating lifelong bonds and promoting personal development.
As a new member, we encourage you to embrace our core values: Respect, Humility, Dedication, and Perseverance. These principles are the foundation of our training philosophy and play a vital role in the way we interact with our teammates, coaches, and opponents.
1. Health Representation:
The undersigned student affirms being in good health without any physical, mental disability, impairment, or pre-existing condition that could hinder safe participation in the listed program's activities. It is acknowledged that a physical examination is recommended by STEPS BJJ before engaging in strenuous physical activities, including those conducted within the academy. The student comprehends that the activities involved in the program are physically demanding, intense, and potentially hazardous, carrying the risk of serious physical injury. Furthermore, the student agrees to promptly notify STEPS BJJ management in the event of any changes in their health conditions during the membership, such as accidents, illnesses, or other medical conditions.
2. Consent to Physical Contact:
The student acknowledges that physical contact may be initiated by school employees, fellow students, and authorized individuals as a part of the instructional process. The student is informed of this practice and grants full consent to such physical contact as deemed necessary or customary in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.
3. Parental and Guardian Guidelines:
At STEPS BJJ, we value the trust parents place in us to guide their children through their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. During classes, it is essential that parents and guardians respect the autonomy of the coaches and helpers on the mat. While we understand the desire to be involved, external interference can disrupt the learning process and distract students from fully engaging in their training.
By signing this waiver, parents and guardians agree to the following:
Coaches' Authority: During class, all instructions and decisions regarding the students' training, safety, and discipline will be made by the STEPS BJJ coaches and their assistants. Parents agree to allow the coaching staff to manage the training environment without interference.
Communication with Parents: If there is any issue or concern regarding a student's safety, behavior, or health, the coaching staff will promptly inform the parents. In case of emergencies, parents will be contacted immediately.
Spectator Etiquette: Parents are welcome to observe classes, but they should remain in designated spectator areas and avoid interrupting the flow of the class. Any feedback or questions can be addressed after class with the coaching staff.
This helps ensure a focused and productive learning environment for all students.
4. Code of Conduct (Guia de Comportamento):
As a member of STEPS BJJ, the student agrees to abide by the following code of conduct, which is designed to ensure a safe, respectful, and positive training environment for all participants:
Respect on the Mat: Students are expected to show respect to their instructors, fellow students, and staff at all times. Disrespectful behavior, bullying, or any form of harassment will not be tolerated.
Hygiene and Cleanliness: All students must wear clean uniforms (gi) and maintain proper hygiene, including short nails and personal cleanliness. Footwear must be worn when off the mats, and the mats must be kept clean to avoid contamination.
Use of Equipment: Any equipment used during training must be handled with care and used only as directed by the instructor. Damage to equipment due to misuse may result in additional charges.
Representation Outside the Academy: Students are expected to uphold the values of STEPS BJJ during competitions and any activities outside the academy. Misconduct outside may affect their participation in the program.
5. Safety and Hygiene Guidelines:
STEPS BJJ is committed to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all students. The following guidelines must be strictly observed:
Personal Health and Injuries: Students must refrain from attending classes if they are sick, have contagious conditions (e.g., skin infections, flu), or are injured in a way that could affect the safety of others or themselves.
Protective Gear: Students are strongly encouraged to use protective gear such as mouthguards during training sessions. Any additional equipment deemed necessary for certain drills will be communicated by the instructor.
Accidents and Emergencies: In case of injury or accidents during class, students must notify their instructor immediately. STEPS BJJ is not liable for injuries sustained while students are not following the prescribed safety protocols.
6. Media Consent:
By signing this waiver, the student grants STEPS BJJ permission to capture photographs and videos during training sessions or events. These media may be used for promotional purposes, including but not limited to social media, websites, and marketing materials. If a student prefers not to be photographed or filmed, they must notify the academy in writing.
7. Release of Liability:
The undersigned applicant, student, or invitee (e.g., guest, free class pass, trial member, coupon user, etc.), along with their respective parents/guardians (for those under 18 years), hereby releases and forever discharges STEPS BJJ, including owners, officers, directors, employees, agents, representatives, contractors, sub-contractors, volunteers ("staff"), and premise owner, from any and all liability for personal injuries or damages resulting from participation in any of the listed program's activities. This release covers occurrences on or off the facility's premises, including those arising from intentional or unintentional acts of management or staff, to the maximum extent permitted by law.
